Department of Education Secretary Leonor M. Briones who was on a two-day visit to Ilocos Norte starting February 8, said public school teachers are no longer underpaid. Referring to the notion that teachers are overwork yet they are underpaid, Ms. Briones clarified the minimum basic pay of a public school teacher now runs up to 23,000, excluding performance bonus, incentives and some other perks they receive as allowance from the local government units they served. According to Ms. Briones, “master teachers can now earn as much as 35,000 to 50,000 all in all plus retirement benefits and access to credits.”
