Zero Waste Management: Solsona leads the way in IN

SOLSONA, Ilocos Norte — Plastic wastes clogging water canals and street drainage system are familiar sights when traveling along national highways and public places but not in Solsona town, their roads are clean, and green.

It’s all because of a local government unit-initiated program on zero waste management. Biodegradable materials such as dried leaves, agricultural wastes including animal wastes and market wastes such as rotten vegetables and pilings are collected for their vermin composting project. Earthworms eat these organic wastes, turning them into very high quality compost used by farmers in their vegetable farms, tree nurseries, flower gardens and rice fields.
