In the upland town of Adams, Ilocos Norte, 63 unemployed housewives banded together in 2007 and underwent training on local wine-making. Carmelita Abnasan, 41, taught them the right formula for local fruit wine-making, which she inherited and perfected from her forefathers in Mountain Province. Four years ago, these women who were living their heart’s content, preparing food for the family and helping their farmer husbands till the land are now actively engaged in business enterprise, selling a broad range of local fruit wines like bugnay (wild blackberries), tapuey (upland rice wine), malubeg (red berries, passion fruit, wild cherry, star fruit, pineapple and the latest discovery of Rochel fruit wine, also available in this town.
