PIDDIG, Ilocos Norte—When asked if they know Teofilo Yldefonso, most Ilocanos here would probably have no clue. But this is set to change after the National Historical Institute (NHI) built a marker in this town’s plaza on September 21 featuring a colored statue of the man whom the NHI recognized as the first Filipino Olympian and the only back-to-back Olympic medalist of the Philippines.
Born in Barangay 4, Sitio Bayog here in Piddig, Ilocos Norte on November 4, 1903, Lt. Teofilo Yldefonso is a great swimmer and a gallant soldier who introduced the modern breaststroke in swimming.
