San Nicolas declared under state of calamity due to Chikungunya

SAN NICOLAS, Ilocos Norte—Local officials here has declared this town under a state of calamity on July 25 after the number of suspected Chikungunya cases surged to over 200, affecting at least four neighboring barangays.

San Nicolas Vice Mayor Dr. Alfredo Valdez said, “Chikungunya may not be as deadly as dengue but farmers who are mostly affected by this illness could not go to the field thus affecting their productivity.”

In a special session conducted by the Sangguniang Bayan on July 25, the town council

has unanimously declared San Nicolas town under a state of calamity to take preventive measures against the Chikungunya like disease.

Valdez said the municipality’s stock of medicine is below critical level and there is a need to purchase more medicines including the conduct of fumigation among the 24 barangays of San Nicolas.

San Nicolas town is presently ruled by a couple of doctors, Mayor Dr. Melanie Valdez, who succeeded her husband, the three-term mayor who slid down to the vice mayoralty post.
